Can a design element rooted in natural materials, functioning through continuity and repetition, effectively preserve and transmit cultural rituals to the modern age in a contemporary and enduring manner? Anatolia stands as a region where coffee consumption transformed from a mere beverage into a cherished cultural tradition over centuries. Drawing insights from this rich heritage, the aim is to create a design that resonates with the present. In the coffee-making process, grinding plays a pivotal role after roasting, where the use of natural stone, like Afyon white marble, is crucial to preserve the bean's chemistry and enhance the quality of the final brew. The circular motion around a central pivot point allows the coffee grounds to accumulate in a stationary groove on the surface, a feature made possible by the marble's high friction resistance.
Despite the prevalence of electric grinders made from synthetic materials in today's market, these machines often generate heat due to direct contact between the coffee bean and the grinder blade, compromising the bean's chemical structure. To counteract these drawbacks and improve the grinding process, DEVR introduces a design that utilizes natural materials, such as stone and wood, powered by human muscle rather than electricity, with minimal joint details. This approach not only mitigates negative impacts but also allows for varied thicknesses in the ground coffee, further enhancing the user experience.
